Leading discussions on literature: The Great Books method for supporting comprehension and love of literature in an effective and equitable way

The focus of this session will be the power of the Great Books method to support comprehension and love of literature in a way that is effective and equitable at the elementary and adolescent levels. As a college professor, I have found that honoring the constraints of the Great Books method in my classes encourages independent thinking, intellectual courage, and the capacity to change one’s mind. I will talk about these constraints and why I think they lead to meaningful discussion and the love of reading. Then we will model the method and discuss our experiences with it.
